Settlement Patterns: New Zealand's History

New Zealand was originally inhabited by the Polynesian Maori, who came in 800 A.D., making New Zealand the youngest country in the world (Tourism New Zealand, 1999-2010). In 1840, the native Maori signed a treaty with Britian, which resulted in land wars lasting from 1843 to 1872. At the end of these gruesome years of battle, the British came out victorious. The British colony of New Zealand became independant in 1907. (CIA)
In the past few years, more people have been immigrating into New Zealand from China, Japan, Taiwan and the UK, increasing New Zealand's multicultural community. These immigrants tend to be attracted to large metropolitan areas with more opportunities for work; this would be the north of New Zealand.

The major industries of New Zealand are:

- Fishing--> New Zealand has an exclusive economic zone for fishing that is approximatly fifteen times the size of New Zealand itself.  Fishing accounts for approximately 5% of New Zealand's exports.

-Forestry--> Forestry is also a large industry in New Zealand. Forestry includes the production of forest-based products such as logging and pulping. Together the forestry industry accounts for 10% of New Zealand's exports, and these exports are mainly sent out to Australia, Japan and the U.S., but some of these products stay in New Zealand.

-Mining--> Minerals such as gold, steel, iron and silver are mined in New Zealand. Gold and silver mining started in the 19th century but with little volume. Steel and iron have the largest value in minerals, and are usually found in the west. These minerals account for 3% of New Zealand's exports. Another mined mineral is aluminum which accounts for approximatly 4% of New Zealand's exports.

-Manufacturing--> Manufacturing industries employed over 234,220 people in 1999. The range of products manufactured in New Zealand is quite wide - from rugs to yachts.

-Agriculture --> Cattle farming and dairy production accounts for a large amount of New Zealand's exports.(Advamig, 2010)
