New Zealand

Introduction

Picture
New Zealand is a group of islands located in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It consists of many islands, the main islands being the south island and the north island. Its government is a parliamentary representative democratic monarchy, and the head of state is the Queen of England. (Wikipedia, 2010) New Zealand is surrounded by lush, green forestry and wildlife due to its high rainfall. New Zealand is well known for the Kiwi bird, but is also home to the Moa and Kea, two flightless birds, along with many different species of wildlife. (Tourism New Zealand, 1999-2010) New Zealand is also the filming location of many movies, including the well known "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. With the many scenic views, hiking trails, and so much to discover, New Zealand is a popular tourist destination. (Wikipedia 2010)

Approximately 98% of New Zealand's population is English speaking, and just over 4% of the population use the native language of Maori. Although most of New Zealand's food and music is similar to that of Australia, the UK and North America, the Maori culture is still prominent; for example, the Pasifika festival is held every year in Auckland to celebrate many Pacific island cultures including the Maori culture. (Wikipedia, 2010) Furthermore, New Zealand showcases many of the Maori's carvings and art. (Tourism New Zealand, 2010) New Zealand is also very well known for its rugby team the All Blacks - a team with the best win-to-loss ratio of any other national rugby team. (Wikipedia, 2010)
